Kilimanjaro history in short

The history of Kilimanjaro does not begin with a summit climb. People lived and farmed on the slopes long before the first ascent, and the Chagga still grow coffee there today. You can see this on village tours around Moshi.

The dates most visitors ask about are the first ascent in 1889, the renaming of the summit to Uhuru Peak around Tanganyika's independence in 1961, the founding of the national park in 1973 and the World Heritage listing in 1987. The table below puts them in order. If you would rather turn history into a trip, our overview of guided Kilimanjaro climbs shows how treks are organised today.

The Chagga and the slopes

The Chagga live and farm on the slopes of the mountain, and their coffee growing is part of everyday life there. Village programmes near Moshi show traditional coffee processing and lead to the Materuni waterfall. They are a better way into local history than any list of dates.

The mountain was never an empty wilderness waiting to be found. The first ascent is a mountaineering milestone, not the start of human history on Kilimanjaro. Our Moshi guide lists day trips that show life on the slopes.

The first ascent of 1889

The usual account names Hans Meyer, Ludwig Purtscheller and Yohani Kinyala Lauwo as the party that reached the summit on 6 October 1889.

Lauwo was the local guide of the party. Local helpers such as Mwini Amani made the climb possible, and the final stage is remembered in different ways.

Climbers at the summit sign

From Kaiser Wilhelm's Peak to Uhuru

The summit was renamed from Kaiser Wilhelm's Peak to Uhuru Peak around the independence of Tanganyika in 1961. Uhuru means freedom in Swahili. The independence story includes a torch on the mountain on 9 December 1961.

Today a sign marks Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. Climbers who reach it have walked to the highest point in Africa, and you can read how the routes get there on our routes page.

From protected area to national park

How the mountain became a park open to visitors.

1973: the park is founded

Government Notice 50 of 16 March 1973 established the national park.

1977: tourism begins

The park opened to tourism four years later. Founding and opening are different events, so do not mix the two dates.

1987: World Heritage

UNESCO listed Kilimanjaro National Park. The listed area is 75,575 ha.

2005: the forest belt

In September 2005 the forest belt around the mountain was added to the park.

A cable car link between Machame Gate and Shira Station has been planned. There is no construction start or opening date, so you cannot book it. For the facts about the mountain itself, see our Kilimanjaro facts.
