The Kilimanjaro day hike in brief
The classic Kilimanjaro day hike starts at Marangu Gate at about 1,870 m and climbs to Mandara Hut at about 2,700 m. It is around 8 km each way, plus an optional detour to Maundi. You walk up in 3 to 4 hours and back down in 2 to 3 hours, so plan on roughly 5 to 7 hours of walking in total. The transfer from Moshi takes about 45 to 60 minutes each way.
This is not a summit day. The hike ends at Mandara, not at Uhuru Peak, and there is no overnight stay. It is a way to see the forest belt of the mountain without committing to a multi-day trek. You can only enter the park with a licensed operator and guide.

Two day hike profiles
Distances and times vary between programmes, so treat both as rough guides.

| Walking time | 5 to 7 hours (3 to 4 up, 2 to 3 down) | 6 to 9 hours |

For most visitors who have one free day and want the forest without a trek, the Mandara hike with a group is the right size. Choose the private version if you want your own pace. Exact dates and group places depend on the operator, so check availability before you plan.
What the day hike includes
The price of $215 per person in a group, or $275 per person for a private hike, covers the guide and the park fees. Check the exact scope before you book, because other items may be extra.
The day does not include the overnight huts, so you do not need a sleeping bag. It also does not include trips such as the Materuni waterfall or Kikuletwa hot springs. Those are separate excursions around Moshi, see the Moshi guide.
- Guide: required in the park and included in the price.
- Park fees: included in the price.
- Transfer: about 45 to 60 minutes each way from Moshi, check whether it is part of your offer.
- Overnight: none, the hike is a round trip in one day.

Other Kilimanjaro day hikes
Several short walks are on offer in the park. Not every walk runs every day.
Rongai Simba Caves
A walk from the northern Rongai approach to the Simba Caves.
What to bring on a Kilimanjaro day hike
Pack rain and wind protection, warm layers, sturdy hiking shoes, a day pack and a robust water bottle. Boots, jackets and other gear can be rented in Moshi, so ask ahead to check availability. The packing list goes through the details.
Altitude symptoms can appear after any gain in height, so talk to your doctor if you are unsure, and tell your guide how you feel on the way. If you want more than a day, the climbing guide explains the multi-day treks, and the Serengeti safari guide covers what many visitors add afterwards.
Getting to Marangu Gate
Most day hikers sleep in Moshi and are collected for the drive to Marangu Gate, which takes about 45 to 60 minutes. You can also stay in Marangu itself, see where to stay. Ask your operator for the pick-up time and the meeting point, as these differ between offers. Allow for the transfer on both sides of the walk, so the full day is longer than the 5 to 7 hours on foot.
Bring your passport copy or whatever your operator asks for, and keep your phone charged. For a longer stay around the mountain, the getting there guide covers the airport and transfers.
