Moshi, the base town for Kilimanjaro
Moshi and Arusha are the usual starting points for Kilimanjaro treks, and Moshi is the one closest to the mountain. The airport (JRO) is about 45 km away, a transfer of 45 to 60 minutes. Machame Gate is about 50 minutes from Moshi by road. Moshi and Marangu both have hotels and lodges for the nights before and after a climb, described on the where to stay page.
Between treks, Moshi works well for slower days: a coffee farm, a waterfall, a swimming spring and a market. If you want a taste of the mountain without a multi-day climb, see the Kilimanjaro day hike to Mandara Hut, which has a transfer of 45 to 60 minutes from Moshi each way.

Our picks: Moshi
Our take: the town tour shows you the markets; the Materuni day adds waterfall, coffee and lunch; the Chemka trip spends the day at the warm springs.

For most visitors with one free day before or after a climb, the Materuni half day is the easy first choice: a short walk, a waterfall and a coffee demonstration. Transfers from Moshi may not be included in the tour prices, so ask whether pickup is part of your booking.
Materuni waterfall and coffee
Materuni is a village near Moshi. The tour walks you about 40 minutes to the waterfall, then shows how coffee is processed in the traditional way, with a coffee programme as part of the visit.
Wear sturdy shoes for the walk. The full-day version adds a local lunch for $35 per person. If you only have a few hours, take the half day.

Chemka springs and the Moshi market
Chemka, also known as Kikuletwa, is a clear pool at the springs, shaded by palms, where day trips come to swim. The entry fee is roughly $5 to $10 per person, but check the amount locally. Ask about swimming conditions on the day before you get in the water.
In town, a guided tour of Moshi and its market gives you a look at everyday life away from the mountain. A Rau Forest trip is offered as a separate excursion. None of these is part of a Kilimanjaro park visit, so book them as their own half- or full-day plans.
