Why book a Kilimanjaro National Park private tour?
A Kilimanjaro National Park private tour makes sense here because the park can only be entered with a licensed operator and guide, so on any day trip someone is walking with you anyway.
The three options start from the base towns, not from the mountain. Moshi is the usual starting point, and the Shira Plateau hike also collects guests from Arusha. Choose the Moshi walk for a short first outing, the Materuni day for waterfall, coffee and lunch, and the Shira hike if you want to stand high on the mountain without a multi-day trek.

Town, village and mountain tours from Moshi and Arusha, with live prices and availability.
A private Moshi town and market tour: 2.5 hours
The shortest option collects you at your hotel in Moshi and takes you through the town and its local markets in about two and a half hours, then drops you back. Bottled water is included; food and drinks are not. It costs from $30 per person.
Materuni waterfall, coffee tour and lunch: 5 to 6 hours
This day trip runs from Moshi to the Materuni village. A guide leads the walk to the waterfall, and the programme continues with a coffee tour and tasting, then a Chagga lunch. Private transport from Moshi, entry to the waterfall and village, water and walking help are included. It costs from $40 per person.
It fits families and friends who want an active day without the altitude of the mountain. The walk to the fall takes around 40 minutes. See the Moshi guide for the other trips around town.
Shira Plateau day hike to Cathedral Point: 12 hours
The private Shira hike is the one that goes into the park. A mountain guide and private transport collect you from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, and the route climbs the high plateau on the western side of the mountain to Cathedral Point at 3,872 m. Forest reserve fees, a packed lunch and water are included. It costs from $240 per person.
Choose it if you have one free day and want real altitude. The day is long, so it suits fit walkers who are used to hiking; the day hike guide shows the shorter Mandara walk for comparison.
What your party pays
Prices are from November 2026, per person. The park fee of $82.60 per person on the Shira hike is paid by card at the gate and comes on top of the $240, so one hiker pays $322.60 and a family of four pays $1,290.40 in total.
The Moshi walk is the lowest total: $60 for two people, $120 for four. The Materuni day costs $80 for two and $160 for four.
The sums are per person because each private tour is priced that way. For fees on the longer treks, see the cost page.
Private tour or a shared trip?
A shared day trip from Moshi to Materuni, Chemka or the coffee farms usually costs less per person and works well for solo travellers who enjoy meeting others. Compare the options on the tours page, and see where to stay if you still need a base in Moshi or Marangu.
