Best time to climb Kilimanjaro at a glance

There is no single ideal month, but there are two windows that most climbers prefer: late June to October, and December to mid-March. Both tend to be drier than the rest of the year. Rain and snow can still come in either window, so pack for wet and cold weather whatever you pick.

The long rains, Masika, fall from March to May, and the shorter rains, Vuli, from October to December. Their start and strength vary from year to year. If you are ready to compare trips, see our guide to climbing Kilimanjaro, which covers days, routes and prices.

How to choose your dates

Five things to weigh once you know the windows.

Drier does not mean dry

The preferred windows are the better bet for dry weather, but they carry no promise. Bring rain gear whenever you go.

Crowds

Operators run group departures in both windows. When you book, ask how many other groups share your route and camps on your dates, and treat promises of an empty trail with caution.

Fires in dry spells

Fires on the mountain can close routes for a short time. Ask your operator for the current status of your route before you pay a deposit.

Holidays and flights

Late December falls inside a preferred window, and group departures are published for it. If you plan around the holidays, book your flights and your trek early.

Safari after the climb

Safari timing follows its own seasons. Check the best time to visit the Serengeti before you fix dates for a combined trip.

Rain, snow and your kit

Whatever the season, the mountain has several zones, and the weather changes with height. Wet weather in the forest, wind on the open slopes and cold at the high camps all call for layers.

Read our page on Kilimanjaro weather to see how conditions change on the way up, and use the packing list to check your gear. Items such as a jacket, boots or a sleeping bag can be rented in Moshi.

Best time to climb Kilimanjaro: frequently asked questions

Which month is the right one to climb Kilimanjaro?

There is no single ideal month. Many climbers choose late June to October and December to mid-March, and either window can still bring rain or snow.

Is October a good time to climb?

October falls inside the late June to October window that operators favour. It is also the start of the Vuli rains, so showers are possible. Ask about route status too, because fires in dry spells can close routes for a short time.

Can I climb Kilimanjaro in the rainy season?

The long rains run from March to May, and these months are not part of the preferred windows. Expect more rain, and ask your operator which departures they run.

When is the short rainy season?

The shorter rains, Vuli, run from October to December and fall mostly in November. Start and strength vary from year to year.

Will the trail be crowded?

Group departures run in both preferred windows. Ask your operator how many other groups share your route and camps on your dates.

What if I can only travel outside the preferred windows?

You can still plan a trip, but expect more rain in some months. Ask your operator which departures they run, compare the routes and pack for wet weather.
