Where to stay in Moshi
Moshi and Marangu both have hotels and lodges for the nights before and after a climb. Moshi is a practical base if you arrive by air: the airport (JRO) is 45 to 60 minutes away, and Machame Gate is about 50 minutes from town by road. Marangu is the village around the start of the Marangu route. Arusha also works as a base, especially if you add a safari.
Many packages already cover part of this. Some 2026 group packages include two hotel nights in Moshi, so check your booking before you reserve a room. If you are still choosing, compare the available Kilimanjaro treks and read what each one includes.

Moshi, Marangu or Arusha as a base
How the three bases fit different plans.
| Base | Suits you if | Transfer times | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moshi | You fly into JRO and want the shortest transfer | JRO 45–60 min, Machame Gate about 50 min, Marangu Gate day-hike transfer 45–60 min | Gear rental and day trips are in town. |
| Marangu | You climb the Marangu route | You sleep in the village where the route starts | Hotels and lodges are available before and after the climb. |
| Arusha | You combine the climb with a safari | JRO 60–75 min, Moshi 85–100 km (1.5 to 2.5 hours) | Safari trips leave from here. |
For most climbers, Moshi is the practical base. If you start on the Marangu route and prefer to wake up in the village where it begins, Marangu is the natural alternative. Read about the town itself on the Moshi page.

Kilimanjaro treks with hotel nights
Multi-day climbs and day hikes from Moshi, with live prices, inclusions and availability.
Town centre and Shanty Town
Shanty Town is an area of Moshi on Sekou Toure Road where some operators have offices. That tells you where you may meet your operator, not which neighbourhood has the better hotels. Compare the town centre and the outskirts by what matters to you: pickup time, distance to your meeting point and what your package covers.
Ask your operator for the pickup time and address before you book a room. Then pick the stay that makes the morning of your departure easy.

What to check before you book a room
A short list that avoids surprises.
Pickup time and place
Ask when your guide collects you and from where. Early pickups mean an early breakfast, so confirm it with the hotel.
Nights in your package
If your trek includes hotel nights, you may not need to book them yourself. Check how many nights and which ones before you reserve.
Luggage
Ask whether the hotel can keep bags you do not take on the mountain until you come back.
Gear
Boots, jackets, headlamps and sleeping bags can be rented in Moshi. Plan a short stop for that, and see the packing list.
Late arrival
JRO operates 24 hours, so late landings are possible. Arrange the transfer before you arrive. Times and costs are under getting there.

On the mountain: huts and tent camps
On the Marangu route you sleep in the huts at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo. They have shared dormitories with mattresses and pillows, and you bring your own sleeping bag. Huts need advance booking, and bed availability on a given date cannot be assumed.
The other routes use designated tent camps. Camp and hut fees are part of the park costs described on the cost page. The Marangu route and Machame route pages list the stops night by night.
After the climb
If a safari follows your trek.
If you add a safari after coming down, Arusha is the usual base for it. For rooms around the safari parks, see where to stay around the Serengeti and the lodge options at the Ngorongoro crater rim. The Kilimanjaro and safari page explains how to combine the two.
Where to stay near Kilimanjaro: frequently asked questions
Where should I stay before climbing Kilimanjaro?
Most climbers sleep in Moshi, 45 to 60 minutes from the airport. Marangu suits you if you start on the Marangu route. Arusha is a good base if you add a safari.
Is it better to stay in Moshi or Arusha?
Moshi is closer to the mountain and to the airport. Arusha works better when a safari follows, because trips to the parks leave from there.
How far is Machame Gate from Moshi?
About 50 minutes by road. Ask your own operator, as transfer times depend on the pickup point.
Do trek packages include hotel nights?
Some do. Some 2026 group packages include two hotel nights in Moshi. Check your booking before you reserve a room.
Where do you sleep on the mountain?
In huts on the Marangu route (Mandara, Horombo and Kibo) and in designated tent camps on the other routes.
Is this the official Kilimanjaro National Park website?
No. This is an independent guide with no connection to Tanzania National Parks, the national park or any climbing operator.
