What Kilimanjaro costs

Most climbers pay one package price to an operator. It covers park fees, camping or huts, the mountain crew and meals on the mountain. Park fees alone can run to several hundred dollars, which is why very cheap offers deserve a closer look. Before you compare totals, compare what is inside. The Kilimanjaro climbs page explains routes and trek lengths.

Fees in Tanzania are quoted in US dollars. The amounts below are 2026 figures for adult non-resident visitors. Rules and amounts can change, so ask your operator for the current figures and whether VAT is included.

$1,399 to $9,190Example package prices per person in 2026, from a 5-day group climb to a premium Grand Traverse
$70Adult conservation fee per day
$50 or $60Per night for camping or in the Marangu huts

FeeUnitAmount
Conservation feePer day$70
CampingPer night$50
Huts (Mandara, Horombo, Kibo)Per night$60
Rescue feePer trek$20

Check whether 18 percent VAT is added on top of these amounts or already included. Children and residents of East Africa pay different rates. Ask your operator which amounts apply to you.

A worked example with these amounts: a 7-day trek with 6 nights of camping comes to (7 × $70 + 6 × $50 + $20) × 1.18 = $955.80 in park fees, before crew, food, transfers and everything else.

Tips and fair pay for the crew

How the guidelines handle it.

There is no legal tip that applies to every climb and no single dollar scale. Porter welfare guidelines ask operators to disclose crew size and the tipping procedure before the climb. Pay each crew member directly where you can. If you hand over one sum, announce the total and the split in front of the crew and write it down.

The guidelines also limit loads to 20 kg per porter on top of personal luggage, and call for three proper meals a day, suitable clothing, shelter and care for sick porters. A price that looks too low may mean pay and food for the crew are squeezed. Ask the operator how it treats its crew.
